Academic Bowl
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 :: 75 Views :: School Memo ::

This Spring St. Lorenz will hold its 26th annual Academic Bowl. During its long history, there have been many changes made in the format of the Bowl so here are the answers to some frequently asked questions.

What is Academic Bowl? The Bowl is an academic competition between teams composed of St. Lorenz students in Grades five through eight. It was organized to recognize the academic abilities of our students and encourage them to use these abilities to the glory of God. Questions are written by our teachers and encompass all of the academic areas as well as some trivia.

When is Academic Bowl? This year the Bowl will be May 5-7 with the first round being held during the school day on May 5, and the other three rounds being held in the evenings at 7:00 p.m.

How are teams chosen? At the end of March a qualifying test is given to all students in grades five through eight. These test scores will then be combined with the students’ class rank based on their first semester grades. The top 8 students in each classroom in grade five, the top 16 students in grades six and seven, and the top 24 students in the eighth grade will qualify to compete. The fifth through seventh grade contestants will choose eight of the eighth graders to serve as captains. These captains will choose the teams which will include 2 fifth graders, 2 sixth graders, 2 seventh graders, and 3 eighth graders including them-selves. Thus, each team will have 9 members.

Who serves as coaches for the teams? Any willing adult may volunteer to coach a team. However, the teams are usually coached by parents of the students on the teams.

When do the teams practice? Teams are encouraged to practice once a week for the four weeks preceding the Bowl. These practices should not exceed an hour to an hour and a half. Most of this time should be spent preparing for the religion questions which are chosen from a different book of the Bible each year. This year the religion questions will come from the book of Exodus.

How does the competition work? During the first part of the competition each evening, the team members from each grade level work together to answer questions which are submitted to all the teams at once. Thus, any or all of the teams can score on each question. However, during the lightning round in the second part of the competition each evening, only the first contestant to "buzz in" gets to answer the question and will either gain or lose a point for his team. The top two teams after the first three rounds compete in the championship on May 7. You are invited to be there to support them.
